German Chocolate Cake

Ingredients:

Cake:

1 pkg baker's german sweet chocolate

1/2 cup boiling water

1 cup butter, softened

2 cups white sugar

4 egg yokes, not beaten

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp soda

1 1/2 cups flour

1 cup buttermilk

4 egg whites

Frosting:

1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup sugar

3 egg yolks

1/2 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/3 cup coconut

1 cup pecans, chopped

Instructions:

  1. Pour boiling water over broken up chocolate and set aside to melt.

  2. Beat sugar and butter until creamy. 

  3. Add one yoke at a time, beating well between each addition.

  4. Stir chocolate well and mix in melted chocolate and vanilla into the sugar/butter mixture.

  5. Add flour and buttermilk alternately.

  6. In a seperate bowl, beat egg white to soft peaks and then fold into cake batter.

  7. Pour into a greased cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes.

  8. Frosting: Combine first five ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat until it thickens...about 12 minutes.

  9. Add coconut and pecans and beat until cooled and a good consistency.
